> That's a *really* interesting take on the subject, and one that hits home with me. I, too, am sort of perplexed by why immigration is such a hot button topic with such polarized viewpoints. Maybe it's because I live in New Hampshire, not a place where illegal immigrants come to and take jobs. In any case, it seems like an easy issue to compromise on and not one that's *that* hugely important to the national economy when all is said and done. I also have an opinion on the subject, and moreover I understand and sympathize with arguments from both sides. But it's not something I can get worked up about.

It *feels* like a big deal to many people in the southwest (I'm in Arizona) and the west coast, because such a large proportion of the population are illegal immigrants. I'd guess a majority of the people in my neighborhood are here illegally.

The law-and-order folks call the movement an "invasion" and, at the extreme end, results in that utterly disgusting border minutemen group, who are building a wall and openly talk of blowing up immigrants. I'm closer to the other extreme, wanting to help the No More Deaths group who rescue immigrants dying in the desert, give them food and water, wash their blistered feet and carry the exhausted to medical facilities.

For a long-term solution, the best thing to do would be to help improve Mexico's economy.
