Exactly what do you consider "classic" rock? I'm still getting over the shock and horror of finding out all the music I liked from the 80s and early 90s is now all on VH1 Classic. There's just no way in hell Poison and Slayer and Motley Crue and The Scorpions could ever be considered "classic" to me, but apparently they belong on the old fogey music video station now.

So what do you mean by "classic" rock? If you mean what Sam meant by the term, then refer to his post. But if you mean bands and artists that were actually active in the 80s, then it's obvious why they were "more popular" then than now--they WERE "pop" rock then. They were cutting edge and they defined the cultural landscape of the times. So of course they were more popular back then.
