> How does entertainment show disrespect? War is not a laughing matter, of course, but what's wrong with being amused during a war? Certainly, US soldiers are risking their lives overseas for us, but reading jokes while they're fighting doesn't mean that we don't support them. Rather, it seems counterproductive to me to change your habits because of a war in Iraq. After all, aren't they fighting so we don't HAVE to change? Nor does it seem incongruous to me to be saddened by tragedy and then amused by a game or a joke, unless the joke is at the expense of the dead. If we allow the tragedy of death in war to take over our life, then the life was lost in vain.

Last fall, some people called in to a radio show to complain about the morning show being upset about the San Francisco Giants losing in the World Series. The caller felt that there were more important things to worry about and that it was dumb to be upset about a sporting event. The response from the hosts of the show was that it was possible to be upset about more than one thing at once and that there was never one thing that had to take precedence over any other thing that elicits feelings.

Also, by stating that this Oscar show will have more security than any other before, is that saying that the terrorists would want to hit us in an area that represents all they hate about America (but probably still enjoy)? Or is it more indicative of the celebrities thoughts that they are so important they must be a target that we cannot afford to lose? Either way, it is pretty sad to think about.
