I don't think it's a question of entertainment so much as the star worship that goes along with it. Entertainment, and matters arising from it, are good things which should continue, and are possibly even more necessary in troubled times. Self-importance is exactly the opposite. It isn't ever a good thing, of course, but it becomes much more distasteful to the public at such times. (Note that I'm not trying to start a big tangent on how it's public demand that keeps the paparazzi employed -- just pointing out how such things are perceived.) By letting the Oscars go ahead but toning down the aura of self-adoration and conspicuous consumption that usually goes with big awards shows, exactly the right things are being focused on.

I agree with Sam about the interviews, though. That seems rather pointless.
