Hercules and the Amazon Women (1994)

Reviews and Comments

In this, the first episode of Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, technically a TV movie, Hercules runs amok with a tribe of women that Hera is using to get at Hercules and their male neighbors. The clumsy moralizing in the story is trite and unwelcome, and the production is banal in its execution. Moreover, not that the special effects can be held to too high a standard, given the made-for-TV budget, but the multi-headed serpent is painfully terrible.

The film might have worked in spite of all that if any of the characters ever behaved convincingly. But they fall in love arbitrarily, grow to respect each other without impetus, and pull social enlightenment out of thin air as the story dictates. Most bizarrely of all, murders are not just forgiven but entirely forgotten as needed. It's bewildering that this spawned such a popular TV show.
