This was actually my favorite "Gratuitous Legolas Scene" from the three movies, and I think Gimli's line directly after Legolas is victorious is the best line in the film, as it's not only a hilarious line at just the right moment in the tense battle, it's also perfectly in character for Gimli.

However, I think you're right. If I hadn't already been expecting a Gratuitous Legolas Scene, it wouldn't have come off as well. But knowing what PJ liked to do with this character in each movie, I knew we were in for a spectacular stunt and it came off great.

I actually thought this was meant to convey the power of the ring more than anything else. It was the ring desperately trying to save itself by somehow magically keeping Gollum alive and trying to keep itself out of the lava. I do agree though, it could have been better.
