Although I was christened, I'd have to say that my religious beliefs are not entirely in line with those of the church (in fact, should there be an afterlife, I'm going to have a word with this God bloke about this whole organised religion nonsense and how much trouble it's been). Is it unethical for me to listen to Mozart's Great Mass in D minor? Probably not.

Religious or not, it's all still music, and if you enjoy listening to it, then I can't see a problem with it. It may well lose a great deal of cultural significance, but that doesn't really matter. No-one ever declared a Jihad on the Beatles, or Kulashaker, did they?

(aside: or is it a Fatwah? Hold on...I think Fatwah is the call to holy war, and Jihad is the holy war. Therefore you issue a Fatwah, but declare a Jihad. Feel free to enlighten me if you know any different.)

I would understand people being offended by someone turning up to prayer, or any other religious gathering, and sitting chilling out to the music whilst everyone else is getting down to some serious worship - that's just discorteous - but I'd be a more than unimpressed if someone told me that I couldn't listen to a particular tune, or lyric, because it was "sacred". Especially if it was Mozart's Great Mass in Dm.
