Several open source alternatives to Word can read and save Word-format data files. Open Office can import and export not only Word documents but Excel spreadsheets as well. Admittedly, Open Office still needs work, but it's coming along.

I never understood why you hate Netscape so much, but have you tried Mozilla? The very recent releases of Mozilla are NICE. Clean, function browsing without the gazillion security holes of IE, nor the bloat, hard-sell glitz of the latest Netscape releases.
