A strange addiction

Isn't it weird how much we're all addicted to electricity? I mention this only because atrocious weather conditions in Britain over the past weekend have led to a power cut in my area for about 24 hours. (I'm posting this from school...I don't know whether power's on at home yet). Anyway, the power went yesterday morning, and I found it very odd how much just didn't work. Luckily, we have a gas oven, so we could at least eat hot food, but the electric kettle went, as did the toaster, all the lights and, thanks to modern technology, the computer-controlled central heating. Not to mention the computer (bye bye Rinkworks) and the TV. So, there we were, with an open fire and candles providing the only heat and light in the room, actually socialising amongst ourselves for once.

Why is it that, when something we feel is so essential disappears, we're actually happier without it?
