You describe what I've dealt with in past jobs. While working for the Associated Students at my university, we made appointments for free legal advice for students with a local lawyer. I got a call from a man who wanted to speak with a lawyer and so I started getting the necessary information from him. Ten minutes later, I finally got him to stop talking. Each sentence he said would seem fairly sane at face value but he strung them together into a nonsensical story of the government, aliens, radio waves, etc. I actually let him go on longer than I normally would because I had taken an abnormal psychology class and I recognized a lot of the symptoms of paranoid schizophrenia.

There was also a customer who came into a bank I worked at who wore aluminum foil and other metal to reflect the satellite transmissions being sent at him. Besides that, he was fine.

It sounds like you handled this guy well. There isn't much you can say to him and listening is probably best. There aren't many cases where the person is a danger so I wouldn't worry. Most likely, he won't attach anything that he "sees" to the real world. But it is always wise to share what encounters you have.

It is a fascinating albeit strange illness.
