Each to their own, but personally I think I'll continue to avoid paranoid schizophrenic stalkers whenever possible.
The only people I can imagine you might mean are Downs Syndrome sufferers. I've never met one of those who wasn't a very sweet person. I wouldn't class the mildly mentally retarded as "nutjobs to fear", either.
However, I think in general you need to either start reading newspapers, or start living in the real world. The seriously mentally disturbed individuals I've seen or heard about are not people I ever intend to get to know socially. I feel sorry for them, but I'm not about to start hanging out with the scarily insane just because they're "unique in their way". Sorry.
