This has been my experience every time I've started a job at a company of more than a dozen employees. Your first day or week are usually less productive than they could be as you play the game where you try to figure out who to talk to about getting the things you were supposed to have.

I have never ever worked somewhere where sneakers were not allowed all the time. And I've worked for companies of just about every size. A west coast thing?

At my current job at a software company, a t-shirt, shorts and flip-flops are acceptable.
