I started my career in a suit. I kid you not. That was 1959. After a year or two it was a sport coat and slacks with a white shirt and tie.

The sport coat got replaced by a windbreaker after a few years, but the tie hung* around until circa 1967. Sometime in the 70's it was slacks and a polo shirt. I never got into the blue jeans stage. Now that I am retired, I get to wear them almost everyday.

The only way we could get rid of the tie was to say that we were the only professionals in the south who worked in an unairconditioned building. We threatened to take our breaks in the principal's office just to cool off. The joke, of course, was that we didn't get breaks, but we made our point.
