The Great Muppet Caper (1981)

Reviews and Comments

Arguably the best of the Muppet movies, this second entry in the series involves Kermit, Piggy, and the others in a diamond theft plot. It was the only one directed by Jim Henson himself, although, of course, Henson was closely involved with each of the Muppet movies prior to his death.

The script is hilarious. The Muppets and a huge all-star human cast (including Diana Rigg, Charles Grodin, John Cleese, Robert Morley, and Peter Ustinov) share the laughs, and there's plenty to go around. What puts The Great Muppet Caper, and the Muppets in general, above the usual comic romp, however, is the sheer innovation behind the staging and puppetry. The creativity involved in this film is so much that sometimes the humor isn't even needed to inspire delight in its audience. The climactic heist scene at the end is one of the Muppets' most riotous moments.
