Fourth in the East Side Kids series, Pride of the Bowery once again surprises me with how rough and hard-edged these films are. If this series were made today, the stories would be gentler, cushioned from reality. These kids may be essentially good kids with rough exteriors, but the emphasis is on "rough."

The plot of Pride of the Bowery is routine: the kids go to a C.C.C. Camp, primarily to provide Muggs with the motivation to train as a boxer. Muggs, played by Leo Gorcey, does the hot shot tough guy act with a good balance of edge and humor. Less charismatic and more formulaic than the better episodes, this one will nevertheless bring it home for series fans.
