Boys of the City (1940)

Reviews and Comments

The second East Side Kids flick puts the normal cast of boys together, all except for Huntz Hall, who wouldn't show up until the third. On orders from a judge, they take a trip to a country estate and get mixed up in a murder. The film is clearly a parody of Rebecca, which also features a spooky housekeeper obsessed with her dead mistress.

While the film's low budget clearly shows and many of the gags fall flat, this series entry is one of the better ones, entertaining in a pulpy sense, and superior to a subsequent similar series entry Spooks Run Wild, better known for having Bela Lugosi in the cast.
