This is one of Superman's well-established powers. He has heat vision and freeze breath (in addition to flight, invulnerability, super strength, super speed, X-Ray vision and the ability to turn into a dragon when exposed to red Kryptonite).

OK, so maybe the current continuity got rid of that dragon part, but Superman has always had a pretty much unlimited set of powers, depending on how lazy the current writer is.
