As someone who has been a choreographer and dance captain, I can give you a little insight on this.

A show that is not a "dancing show" can still benefit from a bit of dance. Especially when considering people for leads, it really helps the choreographer to know in advance what level of skill she's working with. Once the parts are cast she can decide whether to put in little dance solos or forego them based on what she's seen at the audition. As for the chorus, getting an idea of how coordinated and graceful people are is helpful in figuring out how to do the non-dance stage movement, which very often falls to the choreographer.

Also, dancing is FUN! Getting a bit of extra excercise is never a bad thing, either. So don't be shy or self-conscious, just enjoy it! :-}
