The other is white, lived most of his life in South Africa, but now has permanent residence in the US. The first one is annoyed when people call him African-American (since he's not American), and the second one annoys other people by calling himself African-American. Yay for ambiguous labeling.

At a different online forum, someone stated that because of the evolution theory that our ancestors came from Africa, "we were all African-Americans". I pointed out that it was an *international* forum, and they got the "African" part right but the "American" part wrong. One other person accused me of being overly nationalistic.

This is why I think the term "African-American" is absurd. I don't see what's wrong or offensive with simply calling people "black". After all, I doubt many white people get offended by the term "white" - I certainly don't.
