The custodian of the Old Man (the guy in charge of hiking up there and checking out the numerous cables and epoxy sealant that was holding him together) went up the day after he fell specifically looking for any evidence of "foul play" and apparently didn't find anything.

The Old Man would have come down years ago if he wasn't held together with epoxy and steel cables and chains. It's a hard loss for anyone who grew up in NH like I did, but it was an inevitable one. Eventually, barring some miracle anti-gravity device, he was going to come down.

I wonder if there will really be any effort at restoration. I can't see the point, really. Sure, the initial reaction is "We gotta put him back together!!" but the whole point of the Old Man was that he was a natural formation. It was enough to try to keep him up there with chains and glue, but now that he's down, trying to put him back is foolish, I think.
