I thought the "no white after Labor Day" rule had its roots in practical conslderations. Fall/winter = wet & cold. White shoes = harder to get clean if you step in a puddle. Therefore, more practical to wear darker colors in fall/winter. Plus, darker colors = warmer (for winter), white = cooler (for summer). Although there's probably not going to be *that* big enough difference in thermal absorbtion/radiation/whatever to make a whole heck of a lot of difference; but people do tend to wear darker colors in colder climates/seasons, and lighter colors in warmer climates/seasons and some of us *do* like to match our shoe color to our clothing.

As a little girl, when we were getting ready for church, and Mom said it was time to put away our black patent leather shoes, and get out our white gloves, white sandals, and white wicker purses, I don't think she was entirely being a slave to fashion. I think part of it, at least, was simply an acknowledgement of the changing of the season.
