"Signs" suffers from the same problem as "Catch Me If You Can:" for most of the movie, it was simply a very well-made movie (that also has the stigma of being a genre flic, both thriller and sci-fi). You can argue that there is some deeper, weightier meaning revealed at the end, but it's flawed because:

1) The ending was stupid.
2) The message at the end is confusing.
3) Depending on how you interpret the end, it's nonsense.
4) Depending on how you interpret the end, it's about god (probably a strike against it as far as the Academy is concerned).
