There is the BEST lift at Essex University Library. I went there a couple of weeks ago to do some research, and really had to forcibly prevent myself from playing with the lifts for several hours. They're what is known as "paternoster" lifts, and are basically a cross between a lift and an escalator. You have a whole chain of open-fronted, constantly moving lift cars which slide past the openings on each floor, with just about enough time to hop in as they go past. Obviously, as they're on a chain, it is possible to go right round, through the loft, down the back and up through the basement (there are two, one going up and one down, by the way), although there are big notices at the back of each car saying "Over-travel through the pit and loft is not dangerous, but NOT RECOMMENDED. It could activate safety systems and bring the whole lift to a stop." Despite this, while I was there I still saw two people coming down from above the top floor or below the bottom floor. I'd assume that they had been trying to get to the ground or top floor, but had accidentally missed their floor and gone further. However, they got out at the first available floor, rather than actually going to the floor they wanted. It seems that nobody, even at a university, possesses a scrap of logical thought...
