> I'm typing this by the light of a candle and a pretty weak flashlight. We've been having a pretty nasty wind storm. Our house and the power lines giving power to our house withstood the 80 mph winds, now it's gotten down to about 50 mph, but the the power is out nonetheless. It's actually pretty exciting. This is the first time in about 6 years that the power has gone out while it is dark. My laptop is running on the battery, and that's why I'm still on the computer. As soon as it dies, I'll have no connection with the outside world; I won't even know what time it is.

Hooray for batteries! We have several battery powered clocks, and radios. One time recently, we lost power during an ice storm, so I went out on the carport and took the battery out of the car and hooked it up to a five-inch B&W TV. We keep flashlights in every room and always have kerosene in the oil lamps. We also have a laptop, but the batteries are weak and only last about half an hour. With the gas logs in our fake fireplace, we get along fairly well when the power is off.

A few years ago, a snowstorm felled a tree across our road and nobody in the neighborhood could get out to the main road. Well, that's not quite true. Our son Sam, got ready for work and started down the road in his truck. When he came upon the fallen tree, he just got his chainsaw out of the truck and sawed the tree trunk into sections and rolled them over to the side of the road. It was just all in a day's work to him.
Somebody at that end of the road got some free, ready-cut firewood. We didn't know about it until I started out much later in the day and found a stump on one side of the road and the branches on the other. One of the neighbors told me to thank Sam for the good service. Later, the same neighbor brought his tractor over and cleared our driveway.
