> Which fortress are you talking about? You use the magic stone and the pass ring at the southern fortress. For getting into the northern fortress you have to jump down a place but you need an item (that would keep you alive when you jump) from the southern fortress for that.

for getting past the cat, patience can be a virtue....sometimes waiting for help is a good idea !!
if you forgot where the sword came from to start with (as I did) try a dark damp place :)
