>The worst performance I had figured out from the first time I saw the cast list for this film, and Liv Tyler did not fail to live down to my expectations. I did like that one scene where she bugs her eyes way out, though; it reminded me of John Steiner. She should play Jaffar's daughter in the upcoming Sinbad of the Seven Seas part 2: The Revenge of Basra. Just so long as she just bugged her eyes out and didn't try to act, she'd be fine.
Darien, I'm no film critic, but I can't help wondering if you're letting Liv's past body of work cloud your judgement on her role in FOTR. Prior to FOTR, the only film I'd seen her in was Armageddon, which of course stunk, but I don't recall thinking her acting was particularly bad. Maybe she has a reputation that I don't know about, not having seen any of her other work.
Still, for Fellowship, I thought she was very well-cast. For one thing, the girl looks like an elf, even without the ears.
Okay, forget about Liv Tyler. It sounds to me like you haven't seen the theatrical version of the movie. I did, and one of the things I really liked about the DVD extended edition was the additional character development. Especially for some of the less important characters like Merry & Pippin, or Boromir. They'll no doubt do some more of that for M&P in TTT, but Boromir won't get another chance.
Did you watch any of the documentaries yet? I enjoyed the fourth disk the most, with the stuff on WETA Workshop and how they handled filming all the scale issues. There's a really cool scene at the end of of that particular section that shows Peter Jackson strolling down the hall with one of his people wearing a "big rig..." a costume on stilts that makes the actor look like a nine-foot tall giant with a tiny head. Peter Jackson looks just like a hobbit.
