My first thought was of "Winter Storm '93" as we called in back home in Alabama. I was in transit to/from Atlanta when the largest blizzard in history(well, recent history)hit the South. When I got to my house we were without power for 7 days and unable to leave the house for at least that long. It seems icy mountain roads don't thaw very quickly when shaded by trees. But, in actuality, the worst "being out in/trapped in weather" story would have to be when my then-future-wife and I were driving from Midland, TX (West Texas desert) to Dallas (Big City), in between which there is little but the sprawling town of Abilene and one HUGE hill that transitions from the plateau of the west to the rolling hills of the east. Guess where I was when the biggest blizzard to hit Texas in the past 100 years came in? You guessed it. Ranger Hill. I was trapped behind several dozen tractor-trailers which, in trying to decend the hill, couldn't prevent themselves from jack-knifing and running into the ditch. We sat on the road, no exit in sight, no food, no water, no bathrooms, no nothing for 10 hours. When I finally did start moving I had no trouble, as I had experience driving on ice before and didn't feel the need to slam on my brakes for no apparent reason whenever I took the notion. However, the remaining trip, which usually takes me about an hour and a half to drive normally, took me about 4-5 hours. I'm still not sure why. Perhaps I was driving more slowly than I remember.

Shan-Hey! A patch of ice! Hit the brakes and turn the wheel really fast!-dar
