Every Halloween our mum would send us out dressed as Smurfs. We couldn't afford any blue make-up though, so she would send us outside in our shorts and wait for hypothermia to set in.

Mind you, trick-or-treating didn't exist in Scotland as such when I were a lad - more a sort of "gie's sweets or we'll pan in yer windaes" approach.
