In Britain we have to put up with pre-determined letter and number patterns, e.g. AB02 CDE - two letters corresponding to the area of the country it was bought from, then two numbers corresponding to the year, then three random letters. It used to be a bit less complicated, but even so, it makes personalised numberplates a rarity.

Having said that... the imaginative use of letters and numbers has resulted in numberplates such as CH01 CES and (previously) LOS 3R and MAG 1C.

I suppose it's one of the things about not having licence plates (and having tax disks instead) that has led to this rather regimented system. Ah well, at least it lets people be inventive...
