I was surprised to find out that in the USA you get new plates every year -- here they go with the car for its lifetime. Annual re-registration of your car is policed by a sticker on the inside of the windshield.

We don't get new plates every year. However, the plates are new for each owner... when you get a car, you have to go get plates for it. After that, you get new registration stickers that go on the plates each year.
