I always just assumed the point of letting families with children board first was to make sure the little thugs were properly restrained in their seats before the rest of the passengers got on.

Personally, I think it should be illegal to fly unless your feet touch the floor when you sit in the chair. And even then it should be legal for flight attendants to administer tranquilizer shots to any passenger, child or adult, who insists on going to the bathroom 15 times in a two hour flight, or tries to talk to me while I'm reading.
