Cats LOVE potato chips. I think it's the salt.

If he vomits food, he probably does need to be checked out. If it's hairballs, that's normal, though gross. The gacking coughing fit is your early hairball warning, which experienced cat owners will take as a signal to seize the cat and convey it rapidly outside at arm's length.

Cats lick themselves clean, and all the hair they swallow in the process has to go somewhere. I have a long-haired cat and manage to keep hairballs down to a minimum by brushing and combing her as often as she'll let me. Now that summer is coming, I try to do it every day. I end up with enough fur on the brush each time to make a whole new cat. Yay for moulting season.
