I'm in total agreement that New England is beautiful in the fall, not to mention the rest of the year. But if you don't live there, you can see similar color in the hardwood forests that extend from there all the way south to northern Georgia. That means almost all of the area covered by the original 13 colonies plus Kentucky, Tennessee, and parts of some other states. I like to drive to New England during that period, because, like they say, getting there is half the fun. In 1990, we drove to Canada, then traveled east and entered New England from the north. It was summer, but still a very scenic trip.
