The paper needs to get you a pager or a cell phone. Give that number out to the people who WILL keep you informed. I guess I'm a little surprised that a reporter keeps certain hours, anyway. I would expect reporters to be where the stories are WHEN the stories are. Work the extra hours if you need to. It all evens out or comes back to you in the end.
