I don't think people can particularly enjoy life if they never truly "come home from work."

I respectfully disagree. I think there are plenty of people who, like me and apparently like Ellmyruh (at least in this situation), if we have responsbility for certain tasks, prefer to have sole responsibility for those tasks, and would like to at least be notified and given the option of handling things ourselves if we're not where the task is at a certain moment.

Especially in a job like Elly's, where being first with the information is important, I think a pager almost allows more freedom, because you know you'll be alerted when things happen, and you can choose at that point whether you want to handle it or whether someone else can handle it or it can wait. You have the freedom to choose based on your own priorities.

I discuss a similar scenario with someone all the time and I don't think I'll ever get to the point where I think of work/job/career as an evil necessity that interferes with your life. Yes, my personal life will always come first, but when there is no imminent event, happening, or danger in my personal life, my work is my life and I don't resent that one bit.
