You can be skeptical, but she did suffer third-degree burns. Coffee you brew at home is around 135 degrees. Coffee served at McDonald's at that time was in the 180 to 190 degree range. The spilt coffee was trapped next to her skin by her sweatpants. Third degree burns can occur in under ten seconds at that temperature.

Second degree burns would not require skin grafts.
