I think the reason for ridiculous lawsuits isn't so much personal irresponsibility as greed. These people are just trying to exploit a necessary weakness in the justice system for easy money. Perhaps the juries allow them to get away with it because they want a chance to get a piece of the action as well.

I just hope that if the obese folks win the case, the judge orders them to go on a starvation diet to protect their fragile bodies from further attacks by evil fast food chains. If the "Dietary enforcement officer" assigned to guard them discovers that they're still gaining weight, they'll be moved to a more secure environment, like the state pen.
