Protecting your country is a good thing, but as has been talked about before, a country needs more than an army to protect itself. Even at its most basic, it needs people to organise the troops and to manufacture the weapons. It needs people to get the materials for those manufacturers. It needs people to handle the business of weapon manufacture. It needs people to govern those businesses. The tree expands exponentially from here, and we've only talked about making guns.

As for your first point, dying for your country is not a benefit to it. The will to protect your country is grand, the will to sacrifice yourself for it is self-defeating.
