Hmm. I'm inclined to wonder if it is something more along the lines of the terms used to evaluate. I agree that it is extremely difficult to evaluate one's self, but when asked to compare one's self to "average", it is nigh-impossible. For example, does anyone think they have any kind of idea what an average level of artistic ability is? It is very hard to get such an idea unless you get to see the works of a good, representative chunk of the population, and usually, we only get to see the artwork of the people who are clearly above average. With some traits that are more visible, getting a sense of the scale we are talking about might be easier, but with a lot of things, I don't think it is feasible.
