Two words: sandstone caverns. You have to get deep into that area (did you open up any of those door things that you found in the mine?) There's a rather exhilirating way of getting to that area if you have -- and you will have to backtrack once or twice as well.

But when you are in the sandstone caverns, check all areas *thoroughly*. If you find an exit, go through it.

You should also find a way to deal with Verna. I would say don't worry about the controls until you get these things done.
