You get experience for what you kill. If you morph a Dragon into a Puffball and kill a Puffball, you get the experience for killing a Puffball. If a Puffball flees, you get zero experience.

I had to play almost forever, but I actually had my very first battle that resulted in zero experience. I came across a single level-1 humanoid (I forget which) and he scurried away before I could kill him. Odd that that had never happened to me before.
