The fastest way to gain experience is typically to go as deep as you can, and kill as much as you can. You'll find that quick trips to level 7, using healing spells between battles, will be your best bet at gaining experience. If you want equipment, deeper pools will give you better stuff. Try looking for pools deeper than level 4.
