> Murkon's Refuge is based heavily on two classic games from the 80s: Bard's Tale and Wizardry. If you look around, you may be able to find "The Ultimate RPG Archives" from Interplay, which includes Bard's Tale I, II, and III, and Wizardry Gold.
"The Ultimate Wizardry Archives" has Wizardry 1-7 and Wizardry Gold on it. My brother bought it, and I borrowed it and checked it out. It has the revised-UI versions of 1 and 2, which I don't like as much as the original versions, but they're the same games.
I dabbled a bit with them and went on a huge nostalgia trip, but even though I was addicted to those games for a couple of years at least, and I still remember them fondly, and they still influence my own work 15 years later, I have no interest in getting into them again. Old games often had fantastic gameplay to them, because they couldn't fall back on fancy graphics to sell themselves -- but back then there were not the advances in usability that there are now, and there are too many things about them that are cumbersome to use that we all just took for granted and dealt with back in the day.
I'd rather play my own Murkon's Refuge now. It's more involved than Wizardry, cuts out the annoying things I don't like, and adds a few things that I do.
Now I just have to write a game that improves upon Refuge.
