But I have another question. It's been bugging me for a while. I swore that I read somewhere that only the first 3 in the party fight the monsters. Well, somehow, my first 4 fight. Is it because I gave him a crossbow as his weapon? He went from being a rogue to a sorcerer, so that might have something to do with it.

I *think* the only bearing that a character's former class has on his current performance is in (1) amounts of HP/SP which were kept from earlier and (2) knowledge of spells (there may be one or two more things that I'm forgetting, but these are the important ones).

Right, you can only attack from the 4th-6th positions with range weapons, and as far as I know they all allow you to hit only once per round. From the first three positions, you can hit as many times as your speed, and if your speed is over 5 you can take out up to an entire class of monsters all at once.

When I got to really high levels, I found it comparatively useless for my spellcasters to hit once per round, so I gave them Staffs of Healing so that they could get healed by walking around, and I just had them watch during battles.

When you change classes, you also keep any WC or AC that an Assassin or a Druid may have accumulated. That can be useful at times.
