Yes, the only way characters in the 4th-6th positions can do physical attacks in battle is if they have long-range weapons equipped. Their former classes are irrelevant in this regard. I *think* the only bearing that a character's former class has on his current performance is in (1) amounts of HP/SP which were kept from earlier and (2) knowledge of spells (there may be one or two more things that I'm forgetting, but these are the important ones).
