Without giving a spoiler, here's a general tip about discovering the usefulness of an invokable object without using it: Go to the equipment shop and try to sell it. How much money they offer you is in direct proportion to the power of the spell that it roughly corresponds to.

To discover the powers of an item with such a strange description as yours, you will, as Sam said, just have to try it.
