Chronian can pretty much always be relied on to put away 2 enemies per round, but Detritus usually only gets one when he doesn't miss completely. Is there some in-game difference between trolls and dwarfs (other than their starting stats) that could account for this difference in performance?

According to the documentation, speed 5 is the threshold where you get to attack two enemies per round. Believe me, when you get a really fast Assassin, he can kick some serious ass. I have a level 26 Assassin with Speed 12, St 30, Ag 30, Dex 30, and he hits 9 monsters for 400+ points each round (and he always hits first). His base speed is 7, but I found great benefit in giving him speed-boosting items rather than regular, stronger ones.

Remember, increased Dexterity means you get Speed faster.
