My party is all 12-ers, and they're working their way around dungeon level 7 right now. With a few exceptions, most of the time they can handle several encounters before needing to return to town.
I agree with ZasZ -- more magic-users would help immensely. I was having problems on level 7 with a sorceror, a druid and a wizard in the party, so I retrained my rogue (who was doing nothing better than standing around getting killed in battle) as a second sorceror. Now my lineup is:
Knight Assassin (formerly Knight) Wizard (formerly Knight) Druid (formerly Wizard) Sorceror Sorceror (Formerly Rogue)
The ability to let fly with four group-damage spells in a single round helps a lot. Also, note that four of these characters were retrained around level 11 of their original class, so in terms of hit points and spell points they're probably more like 13th level than 12th. (I got them back up to speed quickly by sending them out solo after the class change.)
I've been down to dungeon level 8 and won a few battles there, but I won't feel confident about returning there for the long haul until my party is perhaps 14th level or so. As ZasZ said, with the addition of another sorceror, your party of 12th level char's should be able to handle dungeon level 5 just fine.
