Don't give up yet! I haven't taken the time to post to this thread yet, but I know the game reasonably well and I have NO IDEA what anyone else has been advising you to do on this thread. Based on your inventory and what you said you are stuck on, I think people are telling you to do things that you aren't even close to being able to do yet.

When you say that you haven't been able to get into the gardens, do you mean you haven't gotten to the entrance, or do you mean that you got to the entrance and were turned away by someone? The answer to this question will help me prod you in the right direction.
