Killing the dragon is one of those things that requires the right sequence of events. Most likely you've done everything you've needed to do at least once, but possibly not enough times or in the right order. Basically, try every option at every step in the fight. There are 3 sequences that are required to defeat the dragon. Anything that doesn't get you killed can be considered progress, as long as you keep trying different options. And keep in mind, just because you got killed trying something at one stage in the fight doesn't mean it will kill you at a different stage.
